Adaptations of The Haunting of Hill House

There are two film adaptations of The Haunting of Hill House. The first film is from 1963 and the second was made in 1999. Both are titled The Haunting. The 1963 version, pictured to the right, is a fairly faithful adaptation of the novel and garnered critical acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes makes the claim that it is "one of the most highly regarded haunted house films ever produced" ("The Haunting (1963)”). On the other hand, the 1999 version was widely criticized by fans of the novel and film critics alike. It deviated from the novel immensely, as well as having "awkward performances and uneven script" ("The Haunting (1999).”). Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a rating of 17%, while the 1963 adaptation received an 86% rating. The later version is purely horror with none of the psychological element thoroughly present in the novel. Fans of the novel are encouraged to watch The Haunting from 1963 for a true visual representation of Jackson’s work.

There is one stage adaptation for The Haunting of Hill House, prepared by Anthony Neilson in association with Sonia Friedman Productions and Hammer Films. It will be presented at the Liverpool Playhouse this December through January of 2016. There is much anticipation for the stage production and expectations are high.
